How long have you been part of LetterMo, and how did you find us?

I have been part of LetterMo for over a decade now, though my participation hasn’t been the most consistent. I heard about the challenge from the original creator, Mary Robinette Kowal.

Are you currently accepting new pen pals?

No, I am not currently accepting new pen pals

Do you participate in the February LetterMo challenge, or write year-round? Or both?

I write letters year round.

What does letter writing mean to you?

For me, letter writing has been a way to meet new people, and learn about life experiences different than my own, as well as being surprised by what similarities I share with my pen pals.

What are your favorite letter writing tools? Where/when do you usually write your letters?

I primarily write letters at home at our dining room table, with one (or more) feline supervisors. My favorite thing to do is to customize a correspondence, from including inserts, to creating a card using scrapbooking materials, to adding a few well-placed stickers in my letters.

What advice do you have for writing a first letter to a potential new pen pal?

A first letter is a chance to introduce yourself. If you are connecting to another LetterMo participant, look at their profile to see what interests you have that overlap – that’s a good place to start. I like to share information about myself, and tie it to a question for my pen pal to get the conversation going, like “I’m currently listening to the audiobook version of The Murderbot Diaries series. What do you enjoy reading, watching or listening to?”

Anything else you’d like to share?

Even thought I’m sometimes bad at replying back to folks, I smile every time there is something new in my mailbox. I’m grateful to my pen pals who haven’t given up on me. I haven’t given up on them, but sometimes life just removes all the “write letters” cards from my mental deck. I’m working to shuffle those back in.
