Our first mail-in submission to the blog in 2025 comes from LetterMo participant, Mitar, who writes to us from Montenegro. If it helps you get in the mood for reading this entry, Mitar shared with us that this letter was written while listening to “Sacrifice” by Elton John!

Sending you warm greetings from Montenegro!
I’m thrilled about the LetterMo initiative and fully support it. I’ve been thinking about what I could write, introduce one of our traditional culinary specialties!
One of the most famous dishes in Montenegrin cuisine is kačamak – a simple yet incredibly delicious dish often prepared in mountainous regions.
To make kačamak, you’ll need cornmeal, potatoes, water, salt, and a bit of homemade cream or butter. First, the potatoes are boiled in salted water, and then cornmeal is added to the same water! Everything is thoroughly mixed with a wooden spoon until a thick, smooth consistency is achieved. Finally, the kačamak is topped with melted butter or homemade cream, which adds extra richness to the flavor.
Traditionally, kačamak is served with sour milk or local cheese, making it a true rustic delight!
Kind regards,
Mitar
